{June 29, 2008}   Hubba Hula

For the past month I have been up to my eyeballs in Hula skirts for the dance troupe’s upcoming halfa. While I have enjoyed every bit of it, I am tired of the repetition. Here is one of the 18 skirts.  They are beautiful. I can hardly wait to see them on the girls all at once.

This is my wonderful house man. Looks like Harrison Ford? Don’t he?  (Before you comment! Yes I know that is This bridge could only be crossed by 4 people at a time. The 2 of us terified me. grammatically incorrect!)

What a day this has been. I have run the kids all over town and back.I have hardly been home so I am suffering from making stuff withdrawal.  I am out of Boo Boo Balm so I will be making some tonight.  Boo Boo Balm. Such a cute name. It’s for boo boo’s. All kinds. From chapped lips to burns, cuts, scraps and bug bites. It heals everything. My nieces make up ailments just to have some Boo Boo Balm. I made them each their own tubes.  So what is the miracle balm? you say. I’m glad you asked. It is a very old and not so secret(if you’re in the know) remedy.  There are only 3 ingredients. Plantain (not the banana like fruit). Plantain is a weed that most likely grows in your very own yard. It must be in the dried form. Fresh herbs have water that can grow mold. Olive oil ( or any good skin oil) I like Olive the best for this recipe. Bees Wax to make the oil hard like chap stick. Local beeswax is best if you can get it.  Local to your area beeswax will help your immune system build up natural tolerances to your local pollen. Which means less allergic reactions to pollen for you.

First infuse(macerate, or soak ; which ever term you prefer it means the same thing) the plantain in the olive oil for at least 2 weeks in a dark glass bottle. Give the bottle a shake every day for the first week. I just leave mine sitting indefinitely and add more oil and plantain as needed. Strain the oil before using. Now for the recipe:

2 parts plantain infuse olive oil    1 part shredded beeswax

Measure  by weight and you won’t go wrong.  Add or subtract beeswax for the hardness that you want.

Heat oil and wax in a glass measuring cup inside a sauce pan of hot water. This keeps the oil from boiling and scorching.  Heat only enough to melt the wax. Stir and let cool a bit before pouring into a clean container with a lid. It should keep for at least 2 years but I bet that you will run out before then and just make more.  All the ingredients are stable meaning that there is no free water to grow bacteria.

I make large batches because I sell it or give it to family. It is best to make the smallest amount that you will need.

Plantain is an herbal healing, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, skin soothing herb. I use it just like I would Neosporen. Boo Boo Balm  can be used in extra sensitive areas such as the mouth ( it’s eatable), eyes, nose and other places.  My family refuses to live without it.

Have fun making this. If you do try it or have any questions about Boo Boo Balm leave me a comment. I’ ll get back to you.

Peace be with you.
